UTTAR PRADESH
1. THE MOST POPULATED STATE IN THE COUNTRY
There were over 166 million (16.6 Crore) people in UP in the last census in 2001. The population in 2007 is over 180 million (18 Crore). This represents over 15% of the population in India in 7% of the land area. If UP were a separate country, it would be in the top ten most populated countries in the world.
2. THE LARGEST DALIT POPULATION
There are over 40 million Dalits in UP the highest concentration of Dalits in India. This represents about 25% of all the Dalits in India. Overall it is over 20% of the population of UP. In some parts of UP it is over 30%. The national average is below 15%. UP was the first state to elect a Dalit Chief Minister Ms. Mayawati who in June 2007 won an absolute majority in the state assembly.
3. POLITICAL POWER
UP sends the most MP’s to the Indian parliament and has a tremendous influence on whichever government is in power. The majority of the India Prime Ministers over the last 60 years were from UP. From the first Prime Minister Sri Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru to former PM- Sri Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
4. SPIRITUAL CENTRES
The highest concentrations of national spiritual centres are in UP. Varanasi, Allahabad(Sangam), Ayodhya (Babri Masjid), Mathura (Krishna) are well known. Till recently Haridwar, Rishikesh, Gangotri and Yamunotri, with all the spiritual centers near the origin of the two rivers, Ganga and Yamuna were all part of UP (now they are part of Uttarakhand).
5. POVERTY
A high percentage of people in the state live below the poverty line, estimated to be about 40% or 70 million.
6. EDUCATION
There is a very high percentage of people particularly women and people from poor backgrounds who do not know how to read and write.
7. HEALTH
UP has among the highest Infant Mortality and Maternal Mortality in India. (Relationship to the peace plan). It is one of the few states in India where polio has not been eradicated.
8. CORRUPTION AND CRIME
In one estimated 40% of the MLA’s of the state legislature had criminal records. Some have won their elections while they were in prison.
9. DELAYED JUSTICE
The high court of UP alone has an estimated backlog of over 100000 cases.
10. CHRISTIANS:
0.13% of the population has been recorded as Christians, 50% of whom are Catholic. – This is less in total number than in a district like Kottayam in Kerala or Tirunelveli in Tamilnadu. There are 3 times as many Christians in the small state of Mizoram than in UP.
A Startling Statistics for North Indian Ministry:
The land of UP is so large with 78 districts. It is a state with the largest multi ethnic groups categorized as tribal’s and low class people. We need to pray for Uttar Pradesh as it is the strategic center of Heathen worship and practice with a number of Pilgrim centers of religious significance.
Viewed from a nation-wide statistical survey, India’s population in terms of church growth will be astounding. The total population in South India makes up 25% of the total population of India. Out of the total Christian percentage 2.5 the Christian percentage in South.
